The CSU Dominguez Hills Athletics Department is proud to announce a fundraising campaign to honor Dave Yanai, the former Toros men’s basketball head coach and the first Japanese-American head men's basketball coach at any college level in the country. This successful campaign will culminate with the naming of the basketball court at CSU Dominguez Hills the “Dave Yanai Court,” as well as the creation of an endowed scholarship that will help future students in perpetuity.
The goal of this campaign is to honor and recognize the legacy of former Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball coach Dave Yanai, and to honor the standards of teaching, mentoring and coaching that he established in his 19 years in Carson. Garnering much praise from his former colleagues, players and other coaches, it is obvious that Coach Yanai’s name will infinitely be remembered due to his positive influence on hundreds, if not thousands of lives.
To recognize his legacy we seek to name the basketball court within the Cal State Dominguez Hills gymnasium (The Torodome) the “Dave Yanai Court”. An endowed scholarship will also be established in Yanai’s name to provide an opportunity for CSUDH basketball players to further grow not only the athletic skills they possess but their academic knowledge as well. With his strong commitment to both academics and athletics, it is only fitting that an all-inclusive scholarship be named after Coach Yanai.
Many have followed in his footsteps, but none have reached the level of commitment that Yanai gave to his student-athletes both on and off the court.
